Director’s Statement
We often take for granted the quiet role models in our life—the elderly couple next door who always hold hands on their morning stroll. Simple observations like this shape our sense of what’s possible, for what we see becomes what we believe we can achieve. For many young queer people, the absence of visible, lifelong queer partnerships makes such love feel unattainable. I once believed this fallacy, and it became the driving force behind So Be It.
I knew the lack of representation didn’t mean these stories didn’t exist, it just meant they hadn’t been told. Lifelong LGBTQIA+ couples were out there and I was determined to find them and share their stories.
In my interviews, I discovered that my deep desire to connect was mutual. Not only did I crave their stories and mentorship, but they longed for the opportunity to pass them to the next generation. Over the course of our conversations, the couples opened their hearts and shared the tender vulnerabilities of their relationships and their reflections on love, with me—a curious stranger.
While my original intent was to offer queer people inspiring role models, I believe the film’s impact extends further. Love is universal. It’s something we all yearn for and there is no denying it comes in many forms. So Be It celebrates the joy and resilience of same-sex couples who, against all odds, built lasting love.
